And in this case the Estonian proverb "Ilu ei panda padaje" ("The beauty is not for putting into pot") is not exactly true. There is evidence from Russia that the rhizomes (roots) of Butomus umbellatus can be used as food - after drying and milling the flour can be used for baking.
